Zoya Akhtar’s rap drama Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Kalki Koechlin, will have its world premeire at the 69th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival on February 9 ahead of its global release on February 14. Gully Boy is distributed internationally by Zee Studios. The film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment in association with Tiger Baby.
“The narration, the choreography and the music of this film are out-of-the-box, fresh, daring and new. This is why we as a festival are very proud to host the film’s world premiere,” Dorothee Wenner, delegate and South Asia Programmer to the Berlin International Film Festival, told Pickle. “We are very much aware how courageous it is of the production house to embark on this new territory.”
Loosely based on the lives of Indian street rappers Divine and Naezy, Gully Boy tells a gripping tale of success and the struggles that come with it. The music launch of the film took place in Mumbai on January 24.
The teaser of Gully Boys depicts the journey of a boy from the slums of Mumbai, who goes on to become one of the biggest names in the Indian rap scene.
Like all success stories, this one also sees Singh facing roadblocks in his path, posed by family and friends in his case. Both Kalki Koechlin and Alia Bhatt play his love interests.
The soundtrack of the video is a rap performed by Ranveer Singh himself, where he seamlessly delivers one line after another about introducing India to ‘asli hip-hop’.
