Vijay, one of the A-list actors of Tamil cinema, is planning a Diwali treat to his fans in the form of ‘Sarkar’, his third collaboration with director A R Murugadoss after ‘Thupakki’ and ‘Kaththi’.
The title and first look of the movie were released recently, ahead of Vijay’s birthday, sending his fans into celebration mode besides triggering a controversy. Soon after the poster, wich had the ‘Thalapathi’ with a cigarette, was released, anti-smoking activists including former Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss protested it and expressed worries over the negative influence it would create among fans.
“Shame on Actor Vijay for promoting Smoking in this first look of his next movie. #ActResponsibly #DoNotPromoteSmoking,” Anbumani said in a tweet. In another post, he said, “You’ll look more stylish without that cigarette. #SmokingKills #SmokingCausesCancer.” The PMK leader also recalled an earlier promise by Vijay, that he would not appear in smoking scenes.
It is worth recalling here that the first look poster of ‘Thupakki’ (2012), the maiden collaboration of Vijay and Murugadoss, also featured him with a cigar and triggered a row at that time.
Controversy aside, the film is in for a tough fight in the box-office when it releases on the festival of lights, as ‘NGK’, featuring another top actor Suriya, is also scheduled to release on the same day.
Directed by Selvaraghavan, the movie is said to be a political thriller. “Lights on for a long schedule from today. Lights on for Diwali. ?? @Suriya_offl #NGKFromDiwali #NGKFire,” the director tweeted.
Coming back to ‘Sarkar’, it is being produced by Sun Pictures, the film production and distribution arm of powerful media house Sun Group, promoted by Kalanithi Maran. The movie, sources say, is loaded with political messages and there are scenes which take a dig at the current political situation of Tamil Nadu.
Being made on a lavish budget, ‘Sarkar’ has music by Oscar-Grammy winner A R Rahman, while Keerthy Suresh plays the heroine. Radharavi and Pazha Karuppaiah, both actors and politicians, are playing key roles in this flick.
With Vijay said to be toying with political ambitions in a state which witnessed many Chief Ministers from film industry, ‘Sarkar’, meaning government, may help him score brownie points.
Says Bala R, a Vijay fan, “we are eagerly waiting for the release of ‘Sarkar’. We will always celebrate Vijay films like Deepavali. With ‘Sarkar’ set to release for Diwali itself, our celebrations will be huge. And we are sure the film will become the biggest blockbuster of the year.”
